In recent weeks, officials at the Freeport Intermediate School District in Texas have reacted to allegations of sexual assault via cyberbullying. News channel KHOU reports that many parents are concerned about inappropriate images of young girls that have potentially been forwarded to many students.
The sexting issue became public as the result of a sexual misconduct investigation. The case involved a female student and two 14-year-old boys, who told the news provider that the girl and one of her friends had shared nude pictures with them. They added that they know dozens of girls who send similar photographs to other students.
Gina Garcia, a parent in the school system, told the news source that she is concerned because she has a daughter in the seventh grade.
Dennis McNaughten, Deputy Superintendent, said that the student code of contact will be followed and that the offenders could receive suspension or placement in a disciplinary alternative education center, the media outlet reports.
In an effort to prevent the problem from reoccurring, officials said that they are currently distributing educational videos about inappropriate cell phone usage, according to the news provider.
The Guttmacher Institute reports that the U.S. has the highest levels of teen pregnancy among developed nations.
