Despite being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, Alyssa Huber, an 18-year-old from Chicago, recently wrote, directed and produced a film. ABC News reports that Huber's film, which is titled Cursed Waters, is a comedy about a boy who loses his job and becomes a pirate.
In addition to her other credits, Huber also created the sets for the film, and used her own money for the props and costumes. According to the media outlet, the movie took more than three years to create.
Her mother Linda told the news source that this medium allows her to express things that she may not be able to in everyday life.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), such as Asperger's, are reported to occur in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, yet are on average four to five times more likely to occur in boys than in girls. An average of one in 110 children in the U.S. have an ASD.
Autistic children may benefit from wilderness therapy programs, which can provide kids with behavioral education and self-esteem boosting tools.
