New research from scientists at the universities of Navarra and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, reveals that a diet of unhealthy foods may contribute to the risk of suffering from depression. Additionally, they found that foods containing good fats, such as olive oil, may protect people from mental illness.
For the study, researchers surveyed 12,059 SUN Project volunteers over a six-year period. Participants' diet, lifestyle and health issues were recorded throughout the project. Results showed that while none of the volunteers reported depressive symptoms at the beginning, 657 felt depressed by the end.
Those who had diets that were highest in trans-fats - which are present in whole milk products, fast food and highly processed items - had a 48 percent increased risk for depression, compared to those who had a healthier diet, according to researchers. In fact, those who consumed the highest amount of these fats had the greatest risk.
The team then analyzed the effects of polyunsaturated fats - which are found in fish and vegetable oils - and olive oil. They found that these healthier fats are associated with a lower risk of depression.
