School teaches parents and children about bullying prevention

By Staff Writer

Tracy Ferreira, a counselor at Garner Magnet High School, recently launched an anti-bullying week at the school, the Garner Citizen reports.

Stephanie Leibowitz and biology teacher Martha Lawrence helped Ferreira plan a week of activities on anti-bullying, including a workshop for parents.

Students will see videos about bullying and harassment on the daily announcements as a result of their efforts. Teachers will also incorporate anti-bullying information into assignments and activities, and students will be asked to read and sign the Wake County Public School System's policy of harassment

The purpose of the parent workshop is to address cyberbullying prevention and show parents what they can do if their child is being bullied or doing the bullying, as well as provide tools and strategies that students can use if they witness bullying.

More than 16 percent of U.S. children say they have been bullied by other students during the current term, according to a survey funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
