A district judge recently issued a court order last week that bans an Aspen High School student from using Facebook, Twitter or other electronic methods to talk about a classmate that she allegedly victimized online, Aspen Daily News reports. The punishment is part of a mandatory restraining order that was issued by the judge, and the girl could face three criminal charges related to the alleged online bullying.
School administrators and local law enforcement officers in Aspen are aiming to increase their outreach to students and parents about cyberbullying.
Police usually talk to students about issues like date rape and sexual harassment with representatives from a battered women's advocacy agency. Last year, the officer who covers the schools on her beat added a program devoted to internet safety issues.
In a study by the National Education Association, it was estimated that more than 160,000 children miss school each day due to fear of attack or intimidation by another student.
