High school senior creates YouTube video about suicide prevention

By Staff Writer

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is the third leading cause of death among young Americans between the ages of 15 and 24, behind unintentional injuries such as car accidents and homicide.

In an effort to prevent this issue, Kris Hardy, a teen from Vermont, is speaking out about his former struggles with depression, news channel WPTZ reports. The high school senior made a YouTube video, in which he tells other teens that they are not alone in their feelings of hopelessness.

His message comes during a difficult time for the state. In recent weeks, two teens in Vermont killed themselves.

An expert who spoke to the news source said that teen suicides are on the rise in the Green Mountain State.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a nationwide survey of teens in grades nine through 12 in public and private schools in the U.S. found that 15 percent reported seriously considering suicide, 11 percent reported creating a plan and 7 percent reported trying to take their own lives in the 12 months preceding the survey.
