Boxing program teaches girls about self-esteem

By Staff Writer

Raised in a devout Quaker household, Cece CuzaHoward never imagined that she would learn how to punch. However, a new program in California is teaching girls self-esteem through boxing, the LA Times reports.

CuzaHoward was a high school junior when KnockOuts for Girls (KO4G) came scouting at the Boys and Girls Club of Venice, where she regularly hung out after school. KO4G was looking for girls who were interested in learning to box and earning scholarships.

After a brief application process and weeks of practice after school in the club's recreation room, CuzaHoward received $3,000 from KO4G as its first scholarship recipient. The Los Angeles native, who was raised by a single mother, is now a sophomore at Tulane University in New Orleans and studying to complete an accelerated master's program in linguistics.

Founded by Pattianna Harootian and Lydia Castro in 2007, KO4G is a nonprofit boxing charity specializing in training, fundraising and providing scholarships for underprivileged girls.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, as many as 10 million women are fighting a life-or-death battle with some type of eating disorder.
