According to the National Education Policy Center, more than 85 percent of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered (LGBT) students report being harassed because of their sexual or gender identity. In addition, more than 20 percent report being physically attacked.
In order to help stop this type of prejudicial abuse, author and activist Wayne Besen is touring the U.S. to raise awareness about programs that claim to turn gay people straight through prayer and therapy. His organization, which is called Truth Wins Out, aims to help the LGBT community gain self-esteem and security.
Besen started the tour after Exodus International, an "ex-gay" organization, announced that it would focus on youth in the coming year. This type of initiative often tries to convince gay teens that they can "reverse" their homosexuality through willpower and prayer.
In response, Besen said that he could not believe that Exodus would target desperate teenagers who are need of acceptance. Additionally, he wants to spread the message that homosexuality cannot be "prayed away."
He is also the author of the book, Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth.
