A new product on the food market is making college officials nervous. The item is whipped cream that has been infused with alcohol.
The treat comes in different flavors, according to news channel WFTV. The alcohol content is 18 percent by volume, which is more than three times the amount found in most beers.
Liquor stores around the University of Central Florida area said the new form of booze is flying off the shelves. However, some students agree that it can be harmful if it is added to things like Jell-O shots, in which the alcohol flavor is already masked, according to the news source. Teens could get extremely intoxicated without realizing how much alcohol they have consumed.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Florida said that it is concerned about the high level of alcohol packed in something most people consider dessert.
The State Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco said alcoholic whipped cream is regulated, like any other alcoholic beverage.
The 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that among high school students, 42 percent drank some amount of alcohol during the past 30 days.
